Gigantic coal trucks are dwarfed by the sheer size of the Cerrejon coal mine in 'La Guajira' state in east Colombia. this is one of the largest open pit mines in the world.
A large part of this high quality coal is exported to Europe where many organizations protest against Colombian coal (not only from Cerrejon) because of supposed labor abuses and environmental pollution. Cerrejon does not have any labor disputes, though many of their subcontractors have.
Another criticism is that Cerrejon is planning to move the course of a river to expand the mined area. Local indigenous tribes vehemently oppose to this proposed destruction of their main water source in a semi desert landscape.
