Two fishermen work together in a flooded stretch of Sudd swamp along the White Nile. One holds the net on this side while the other crosses the water with a canoe holding the other end of the net. Together they drag the net downstream for a few hundred meters hoping to catch some fish...The Sudd swamp is the largest wetland in the world. It provides sustenance for millions of fishermen, pastoralists and farmers. The water of the White Nile practically comes to a halt here, causing massive evaporation. Hence the construction of the Jonglei Canal that is supposed to circumvent the wetland. The construction was halted during the civil war in the 90s. New plans speak of a continuation of the construction which might result in serious damage to the environment, wildlife, local lifestyles and regional climate. .
