The cattle herders have moved to higher ground. In the dry season this camp is essential for the survival of the herd. .The Sudd swamp is the largest wetland in the world. The water of the White Nile practically comes to a halt here, causing massive evaporation. Hence the construction of the Jonglei Canal that is supposed to circumvent the wetland. The construction was halted during the civil war in the 90s. New plans speak of a continuation of the construction which might result in serious damage to the environment, wildlife, local lifestyles and regional climate.
